>>22536151It’s just a normal thing for Americans to do in Japan, they will come here and work some job that doesn’t require them to use Japanese or interact in Japanese (English teacher, programming at an international company, etc) and then never make an effort to learn the language. Many of them never actually adapt to Japan and become bitter and jaded as they can’t make local friends. They only hang out with other foreigners who always end up leaving as those kind of jobs have a high turnover rate and people don’t work more than a few years before going back to Europe or the US.
I’ve met many and try not to associate with them, they only live in Japan so they can feel superior and complain about it to other people even when they don’t do the bare minimum to get adjusted to another culture. And it’s funny because most districts will have free Japanese lessons for residents from 7-9pm, so it’s not about money, it’s just that they don’t want to learn.
