I have no idea why Astel is forced to use mad maggie.
Anyone can enlighten me? How is using an annoying character that drives people up the wall a means of combatting astel's team having 1 extra point?

Mad Maggie is considered an off meta character. They have anti-camping utility, but not really much outside of that. Astel's overall performance was actually much lower than his normal performance, but he had a lot of fun with Apex which hasn't happened for a while.

Mad Maggie is a very limiting Champion with no utility. Even though it's good vs JP turtle meta there are other picks Astel could have played that would help him pressure other teams while also giving his team support. Her ult also sucks depending on how the final ring turns out.

Astel wanted to use Mad Maggie since the beginning because he likes playing as her, but had trouble finding teammates due to his high points. Hal saw that Rene and Kotone were pretty much at the same level skill-wise (platinum players), and that Kotone had just grinded rank more and got to Diamond 4. The "Astel is using Mad Maggie as a way to reduce his points" is mostly a bit Hal and Astel are doing because it makes things more interesting

That's not true. Mondo directly asked Hal if Astel could not be restricted to Maggie and Hal said no. He also said if Astel picked Wraith on "accident" probably no one would call him out on it, but Astel declined because he didn't want to be flamed.

Astel had to specifically ask for a coach that would be okay with the Mad Maggie restriction.
