Her channel is utterly bizarre. Who watches this stuff? How did she get so many subscribers? She doesn't seem to formally be part of Youtube Kids so who is the target audience here? How do her videos have millions of views? How does her channel have 19 BILLION views? Will she actually stream live? I gotta admit, her model is actually pretty great.

There are a lot of comments on Cookie's videos along the lines of "Thank you Cookie, I used to watch your videos all the time when I was 6, you practically raised me" which you'd think are old fans of hers hearing about her becoming a VTuber and coming back to reminisce on all the good times. Except there are comments like this even on videos from like a year ago or more. So I think she's been around so long she's got a constant cycle of people growing up but thanking her for being such an important part of her childhood and meanwhile new kids are coming in to grow up with her. It's an interesting situation.

Vtubers represent themselves with an avatar that they control with their own facial/body movements. And since one-off gags like Pewdiepie's or Pokimane's didn't led to them being perceived as Vtubers, some commitment to using that avatar should be required. Cookie Swirl looks like she's pretty commited considering she made her Vtuber reveal video the intro video to her channel, changed her banner to her avatar and got a high-quality model with good rigging.

I think it needs to at least be a rigged model, not manually animated after the fact. It doesn't have to be livestreamed though, vtubing began as prerecorded sketches.
I agree with >>22754990 on the commitment thing, basically the person has to take on vtubing fulltime, it can't just be an occasional gimmick. Nyanners was around for years and had success before she was a vtuber, but you can't say she's not one now.

Anyone that streams with an avatar is one, yes even PNGs. They stop being vtubers the moment their identity is based on their real faces. I've met facecam streamers who became vtubers who I consider to be vtubers because they prefer the model over using it as a gimmick.

My honest take, I don't want her to explode in popularity but she probably will and it'll spark other kid channels to get vtuber avatars, then you get the tween friendly homo channels doing it, and it keeps filtering up. Then Disney sees how popular it is and start buying up talents to do it themselves. 8 years later Disney and CN buys out top 5 vtuber agencies and the tech company supporting them.

Vtubers are already incredibly commercialized in japan, some variation of it is inevitable in the west. Kid's toy channels sell toys, but kids grow old. Cartoons don't grow old, they're perfect for it. It's amazing that this hasn't begun sooner.

Don't forget streaming to people online used to be an incredibly niche hobby, 8 years later amazon is buying twitch out for almost a billion dollars.

Kizuna was always a vtuber. Cookie was a children's content-mill for a very long time before adopting an avatar. It's an honest question that needs to be discussed. If t-series starts using an animated avatar will they be the most subbed vtuber? If the king of random's family decides to start using a png of the late Mr. Thompson in their videos will he suddenly be the king of png-tubers?
