They could pay for anything and the best model ever thousands of times over, specially given outfits happen every several months.

Keep in mind that both Cover and Anycolor use in-house apps made back in 2017/2018, hence jerky tracking and animations. Almost all new vtuber companies and indies use newer Live2D apps like VTubeStudio.

Yeah, they were pretty cool back then, but they have definitely fallen behind VTubeStudio and others.
I can somewhat understand it initially, because both companies wanted to use VTubers to promote and sell their respective apps, but they have a completely different business model now.

I've never looked at the open source ones, but I swear there's some default preset so many chuubas have. I feel like riggers for indies are just fucking them over. It has this weird shoulder lean thing when the avatar's head gets closer to the camera. I see the same rigging everywhere.

VTube Studio isn't open source though. Live2D's license makes it impossible to make free or open source software with it. Yes, the source code is *available* to 3rd party developers, but the licensing is typical Japanese corporate legalese. Look at it funny, and you gotta pay for an additional developer license.
For actual free and open source vtuber software you can check Inochi2D and OpenSeeFace-GD.

One of the thing that I'm certain is that the riggers always ask for a super high price if companies like Cover is approaching them.
Some Hololive talents like Risu have said it themselves that it's hard for them to find a cheap artist/mixer/composer because the price will always be inflated so much more than the normal price if they're from Hololive.
So the company will find the rigger who wants to do rigging for them within an acceptable price range, which could risk a bad rigging.

A lot of these people don't really have a ton going for them, they have content that's extremely similar to each other and it's not like many people watch them for gameplay since half of them don't even stream games 9/10 times.
People tune in and go
>wow that rigging is fun, it's good!
And then they end up staying. Whether they even necessarily know it or not, almost every single vtuber who's non corpo and has made it big had a good model with good rigging right off the bat

I can agree with you on Code Miko because what she had was admittedly crazy.
But Bao, Vshojo, and ShyLily were able to pop off because most of their content/ whatever got clipped and posted on YouTube to rack in thousands of views sometimes +100k, mostly boiled down to "UOHHH I'm so horny, look at my horny."
They managed to capitalise on the horniest groups of people that liked Vtubers.

If an indie has the same low quality that holo or niji often do (and quite a few of them do), they just bleed out and die, and no one notices because 2views are easily replaced.

Looking into VtubeStufio and I can understand why Anycolor and Cover would rather keep their own app.
For corpos they charge a subscription model and they control the terms of agreement. They require you to spend an undetermined amount of money to “opt out” of their clause which allows them to freely use your talents for their advertising. That’s a shit ton of free money in advertising if you’re able to use Holos/Nijis image however you want.

There are tons of resources floating, some riggers even do their work on stream.
I admit I have a cursory interest because I'm unemployed have nothing better to do but I've yet to watch any.
I'm curious whether it requires an understanding of graphic design (especially 3D design), or the ability to draw (so you can touch up assets provided by the illustrator), or if if you can get by with just autistic levels of fine tuning that requires no knowledge or prior experience outside of the industry or tool you're using.
In short, do your reps.

That's the general problem with Live2D. Wanna use it for more than hobby/niche stuff? Pay up, buddy. Not saying Denchi isn't trying to turn a profit with VTS, just that Live2D Ltd expects him to pay for playing with their toys.
Would be nice to have a FOSS implementation of the L2D tech, but the JP corpo doesn't like the idea of filthy gaijin reverse engineering their main source of profit.

And before people mention it - yes, vtubers generally can ask someone else to do a model for them, it has happened multiple times before.
A lot of the time it has mainly been for jokes, but in some instances it has been entirely new designs that replace a previous one, or are used alongside others from another artist.
Yes, even in Nijisanji and Hololive, it already has happened before for both companies.
Time is money.

But equally there's also the fact that some companies require models made for older software, modern vtubing systems are vastly superior to older systems, a night and fucking day difference.
Modern L2D can track entire limbs whereas before it was pre-made animations at the press of a button.
In the case of Anycolor and Cover, both made their own in-house systems that work with older specs so none of the riggers can really use the better features in modern software, which fucking sucks because it would prevent Rhombus and face-mask tier rigging that some of them had have over the years, new systems skew the L2D art damn near perfectly these days.
