Matrices are a good example of that, quaternions particularly. Trying to explain why that allows for proper 3D graphics compared to 3x3 matrices is a fun topic.

This discussion comes up regularly when trying to dial back maths to true natural values, basing measurements on constants that can be directly measured in nature, like the distance between the nucleus and electron of hydrogen, the timing we currently use to get the second (but that could be any atom, rather than caesium we use)
