I guess it's just the Epstein news and the power that the word pedophile holds. In western society, if someone is a pedophile people will cheer when they get killed. If you can convince people that someone is a pedophile, they are done. This makes the word attractive for political types that talks a lot about morality.
Overall, people just attach too much meaning to symbols. The trend in politics is to debase certain terms. This explains the growth of "pedophile" from someone who has sex with children to a 40 year old attracted to 20 year olds. I think this also coincides with the infantilization of young adults. In ancient Rome, people were pretty much full adults by 17; they often married earlier than that. The rise of university education, which for most people is just an extension of highschool, which is just an extension of elementary school, has pushed back the concept of when someone is "fully grown".
