They tried to create their own Lord (similar to an Elden Lord), which pissed the Greater Will off to no end. So the Greater Will threw a giant space alien to fuck them up and shove their cities underground.
With that in mind, it's likely that the tears were what they were using to attempt to create a Lord. Tears can actually drop from the balls, interestingly enough. And it's also worth noting that the frog fuckers who you find in the swamps have some form of biological relation to it as well.
