1). They don't sell Akai Haato. They retain the rights, still make some money off views for existing videos (like with Coco) but ultimately the merch sales dry up because Holofags are just as bad as everybody else about moving on to the new hotness. The money they may make on future Haato prospects is smaller.
2). Take a deal for a big sum of money to buy Akai Haato, lose any future revenues on the character. The concept is that the amount to purchase Haato would be prospectively good enough to offset losses on future revenue.
Basically Cover doesn't really lose either way. Either trickle in money for Haato goods over time that will eventually dry up, milking the cow until it is dust, or take a more immediate swab of cash even if it isn't entirely the full amount they might make over time. Kind of depends on what their needs are, but I think a deal could be done.
