>>25938608I think it's a bit of a chicken vs egg thing - if her design was intrinsically-appealing in the first place, the casual viewer/passerby would go "she's so cute.. what's her song like.." instead of just "oh, she sings too? uhh maybe I'll listen to it later"
Of course, I'm well aware that if you actually-watch Irys, you realize she has probably the cutest/sweetest personality in EN and you like her anyway, but this effect takes time to actually work and the casual meme watcher kid will not put that time in.
The other thing is the music itself is very.. blase. Anime-OP-sounding, often actually-in-Japanese etc. Anime music is kind of a tough sell on Western audiences to begin with, it's more like people tolerate it because they like the source material more than for the intrinsic qualities (or lacking of such) in the music. However it seems Cover really doesn't know how to make much else. Mori's music is amateur hour but put together in a way that at least is comprehensible to Westerners, thus it's super successful. Gura immediately got the "wow she's actually an amazing singer" thing down pretty much from the get-go with Ride on Time in order to bridge things over to the "well it's gonna be good no matter how it's made because gura's singing" kind of rationale. Irys, the fucking vsinger, never had that Ride on Time kind of surprise moment. Rather, -because- she's supposed to be a good singer, even though she is, people are more judgmental and like "meh yeah she gets the job done" instead of wowed by it.
