Same shit happened with Tomb Raider, we can argue how good those games were, but they sold well, no fucking reason to go "this is below our expectations" but square did anyway. And killed TR too.
But when it comes to their own IPs, oh, that's their darlings, this dogshit FF15? The one that sold like shit. The one that was criticized for story, abrupt ending, lack of character development and boring world? Nope, nothing wrong here, above and beyond their expectations.
