Well nothing really. The game is good but the viewer market in japan specifically is super oversaturated and it leads to viewers leaking to other channels who are better at the game. Only a few really good Shubas have decent numbers with apex and its all related to their skills with it.

TLDR: Good player = good views. Bad player = bad views.

1. PUBG was the most popular BR in Japan but it slowly died due to cheaters running rampant.
2. OW was also popular in Japan (probably the most popular FPS), also slowly died due to GOATS meta and role queue butchering queue times.
3. Apex was released during those times and it was the perfect middle ground (fast paced BR with characters and abilities) for both dead games, plus it's free.
4. When pretty much everyone else is playing it, anyone would be inclined to try it

I can get it if its a shooter with a ton of user made maps, game modes, that's what kept so many Quake/Unreal/Source engine games alive for so long. But I can't understand the appeal for Apex, so much of it is just walking around even though its the fastest BR ever

Why not play an actual walking sim by that point like Death Stranding? One that at least has a weird plot and world and at least makes navigating interesting.
