The biggest problem though comes with boomer mentality. Parents receive 4050 dollars in dependent tax credits for their kid from 18-25 even if the kid lives on campus. Likewise the AOTC gives them about 2500 a year for their kid. A shitty parent can leech about 38,000~ dollars from the government in credits for their kid. This is supposed to go to paying college costs but many boomer and xer parents over the past 30 years were just like "naw that goes into my vacation fund" saddling their kids with infinite debt due to a culture of extreme individualism which means shitty parents actively steal from their kids and call them entitled or spoiled.
