chances are the big names hololive will stay big so long as nothing prevents them from recruiting new talent or until some irreparable scandal occurs, something orders of magnitude above some vice article rrat but idol culture generally manages to keep their personalities in line preventing most shit from surfacing if there is any to begin with.

I do not think it will keep its current insane momentum forever, no. That said, I think the medium has adaptability and staying power, as well as a business model that should serve to keep it alive for a long time. It will probably eventually recede into a niche thing, but if it does, that niche will be autistically devoted.

Vtubing is an evolution of streaming, offering the advantage of keeping your identity somewhat hidden and being able to separate yourself from your character, play many characters, and try experimental things.

I have the feeling everyone calling vtubers a fad where the Krugmans who were calling Youtube itself a fad 10 years ago.

It's more like a fork, streaming will always have people who want to put their face on everything. But I think it allows more socially awkward people to stream as it means they don't have to show their face, and even have a degree of "character" to hide behind.

At this point, streaming without a "face" of some sort is very hard. People expect a level of reaction from the streamer in the form of facial expressions. Just go on any streaming site and compare the number of cam on channels to no cam channels. Vtubers are a way for ugly people to stream without feeling bad

I think you're missing the point. Streamers are extra scrutinized because anything they do IRL gets dragged into their streaming life. Becoming a popular streamer is becoming that personality, and anything that happens IRL to them becomes part of their identity.

Vtubers are becoming more popular because people don't have to include their real life into streaming. And in fact, it's strictly frowned upon. So anyone who tries to involve real life drama into someone's vtuber life is seen as the bad guy, not the paparazzi.
