It was always a thing to get together with friends and watch B movies together, but before normies got ahold of the internet, you'd probably talk about it for a week and then move on. As soon as you added in the permanence of large, online communities to this, you started to get people flexing how "hip" they were from knowing about this niche "cringe" stuff, and inviting people to look in on it all and laugh at it. At some point, that just became the norm for how more and more people got introduced to niche entertainment/hobbies as it became the cool thing to like "weird nerdy shit".
Also yeah, she kinda worded that tweet in an overly needy/pandering way.
