Management should have really tried to compromise, especially after the threat of leaving came up. The company isn't going to suddenly die without him, but it's a pretty big scar regardless.
There's taking the company in a new direction and letting some of your oldest talents leave because you won't compromise with someone who has gotten you a lot of interesting projects done over the years. Pretty fucking dumb man.
