I guess the smaller ones are phoning it in, but if they're still doing it, that means they're not qualified for a better-paying job and/or are just doing it as a side gig/for fun.
As for your comparison, I'd say yes, the head of a particular supermarket branch feels grateful towards the cash cows that buy shit from his store, but it really is not the same, there's no direct emotional involvement and pandering, too many middlemen.
I'd say it's more like a semi-famous musician being grateful to his audience. Yes, he signed up to the record label, but his fans made him. Unless fame got to his head, he will be grateful to them, why wouldn't he?
