Of course the US exploits this fully by reminding them that all the agreements they have is with the "Republic of China" and not "Taiwan" on the official paperwork so if Taiwan thinks of going "Let's officially become a country" the US reminds them that would have them conveniently outside the defense agreements.
Really the Taiwan doing the entire Republic of China thing is benefiting everyone involved.
PRC gets to justify expanding naval force projection (and feeds their MIC).
The US gets to justify continued naval presence (and feeds their MIC).
ROC gets to troll a billion people just by existing (and being under the US nuclear umbrella as long as they don't start shit)
