I am sick and tired of the overdetailed, lore-heavy mess that has become the standard for VTuber designs these days. I think all the shounen-tier loreshit ultimately misses the point of the Vtuber appeal: VTubing just an extension of the Slice-of-Life genre - cute anime girls - both in terms of the character they play and actual vtuber avatar - on stream with the added bonus that you can potentially interact with them through chat and akasupas. I think the staff designs are based because they're plain and simple - anime girls as OL are cute and hot.
I think Kizuna Ai got the whole VTuber appeal right from the beginning - a simple design and simple backstory/lore as to not detract from the main attraction - a cute anime girl making vlog/letsplay style videos (later streams) who occasionally sings and dances. I don't think most of the expansion of things like lore and overcomplicated designs made vtubers more engaging or more immersive - think of something like HoloCouncil where almost none of the lore shit was retained after debut. If you contrast this with someone like Salome who's just meant to be a cute girl LARPing as an ojousama but really isn't, you have a far more engaging chuuba as it's a simple enough character to play for long periods of time onstream.
That being said, however, I think something like Myth was a good middle ground. While I still felt their designs were a little too complex for my tastes and that a lot of the loreshit was forced, the relative simplicity of their lore and designs (Ame = time travelling detective, Gura = shark girl, Mori = Death's assistant, etc) made it at least doable to embody whatever their characters are meant to be. Additionally, the Gap Moe of someone like Ina - an Eldrich being - actually just being a shy, quiet girl is a fun dynamic that I could totally see in an actual Slice-of-Life show - same goes with Mori who is literally meant to be the embodiment of death but acts like a clumsy dork.
Anyways, the point is that the plainest anime girls are the best ones - most of this post ended up becoming a personal tangent about my personal gripes with modern vtuber designs.
