You are basically forced into a specific way of playing, because of how your ammo capacity is limited so that it forces you to gain health, shield and ammo mid-combat with their respective mechanics of getting them.
So unlike original doom, where combat is solely about how you move around enemies, the order in which you take them out, and you gather resources by exploration, Eternal also adds resource management to the equation of how to move around and take out enemies.
It's fun if you have an arena shooter background, but I can see why people don't like it, because you can't play it more casually.
