For one, there's always been the positive negative reinforcement through reply, only back when, it was "You just won the internet", or "Epic win" or "my sides". This doesn't change.
The biggest difference between reddit and 4chan is one, you can't filter people based on the respective outlook. Most people filter from top to bottom who has the most upvotes, so most people get buried, where if you just see someone with a big chain of replies, there's a 50/50 chance it's porn or gore.
Then there is the fact that there is no reputation hold over. Even though newfags are encouraged to lurk, nothing is to stop them, and hell, more than half the time you can spot newfags from a mile away.
The other thing about reputation is that there is no lingering drama. People can deny the holocaust in one thread and then talk about how much they love Towa in the next and no one will be the wiser, because it doesn't matter, unlike reddit where people will trace comment histories to dredge up some bones to win an argument
