The only ethnical ways to euthanize a sapling is to use gas or carbon monoxide in a sealed chamber, which is readily available at any reputable sapling breeder. They even do it free of charge. At the very least, you can stun one before slitting its throat over a designated receptacle. A solid blow to the back of the head, right at the brain stem, is enough to disorient a sapling enough that it won't understand that it's dying.
