pretty much yeah. this gives advantages especially but not exclusively to those who have great personality/wit, but not attractive face/body to jump into the streaming market. but it's not solely there just as a "mask", it's an improved medium to do more things that can't be achieved irl. for instance with 3d models you can synergize it with 3d stage you made yourself. 3d concerts are ~90% cheaper compared to real life concert where you have to rent real stages, etc. there are also more to it. you can say this is the future of entertainment. soon enough everything will be virtualized, it's even not surprising to see our mind/body gets transferred to virtual mediums in the future.

The streamer is technically a Voice Actor/Seiyuu. The avatar is technically owned by the company, whether it be by the Voice Actor itself (indie) or a corporation such as Cover, cygames or Netflix. Instead of a standard 'anime', a vtuber has a 2 way connection with the audience. Streamer X is a well known streamer that also streams as Vtuber X. It is professional etiquette that Streamer X knows how to separate her original streaming content from her vtubing duties. The audience should know the difference between the avatar and the seiyuu. It is the same as knowing Henry Cavill plays Superman and is not Superman and cannot fly when pushed down a skyscraper.

Western 'vtubers' just make an avatar of themselves and stream as themselves. This doesn't have the same connect as the original concept of a 'Virtual' Youtuber.

I think there's a bit of a difference here. Gorillaz and Dethklok were created by Damon Albarn and Brendon Small respectively and while they may voice act and sing as one of the characters they created, they don't really "act" as any of them. Like no one will ever see Damon as 2D or Brendon as Nathan Explosion.

It would be pretty interesting to see a virtual band composed entirely of personalities whose online personas are portrayed by their vtuber character.

Nah, even if that is the term they use they are motion capture actors first and foremost who embody the characters physically not just the voice.

I get it. So it's like real-time motion capture acting. Instead of filming the actor doing the mocap, then pasting the animation onto the skeleton of a virtual character, the mocap is performed in real time before a live audience. So it's like watching actors in a play acting on a stage instead of watching a movie.

There are technically 2 types of vtubers, one is pre-recorded and the other is streaming. Pre-recorded vtubing is mostly done by Kitsune Ai, Gold Ship and shitposters like Risu who shits a lot of short nuts, maybe even Narukami or other gossip/news vtubers. The other one is the real time streaming vtuber such as Tocino Sora, Hululu and shitposters like Risu whi shits regular sized shits at a paltry amount per week.

It's way too difficult to come up with likes/dislikes and personality traits that the IRL streamer doesn't share with the character and keep it up without running into contradictions.

Houshou Marine voice actor is different from a pirate character obviously, but they do share same taste in doujin, anime, games and music. It's simply too difficult to craft an entirely new persona with no similarities and have them perform live consistently.
