Because it became popular because you had girls who were shy about showing themselves that played video games and poor lonely guys, who no they do not have female friends, who thought they found someone like them. Someone who liked video games and maybe anime/manga BEFORE Big Bang Theory made Nerd culture "Cool" after an entire generation or two got ostracized for liking it, mainly by women. Hell some still are if it's not the Hollywood labeled schlock spewed out seasonally now.
Do they think this medium was grown and supported by well adjusted people with lives? Fuck no, it was grown by people who had neetbux but no one to spend it until Vtubers came along and gave them that little spark of hope that maybe, just maybe they can find someone who actually shares their interest and doesn't consider them a weird freak just because they picked up a copy of a Japanese game that isn't Nintendo, Square Enix or a FromSoftware title.
