Most Japanese buy pets from stores and don't adopt either, so if a perfectly good dog or cat is in a pound he's got about a week to live.

If you're ever in Japan, always adopt and never support these exotic pet industries or buy from stores. The Japanese are just inexcusably and extremely ignorant about animals, like putting sensitive nocturnal owls in bright "animal cafe" settings with lots of noise. If you want to be a hero, adopt a Japanese pet and take them far, far away from that island.
