Ageism isn't calling someone old, ageism is making disrespectful generalizations/assumptions about people based on their age e.g. he's young so he must be a degenerate stoner punk like the rest of his generation, or she's old so she can't think for herself and needs to be handheld through everything, stuff like that. I'd imagine most people would take offense to negative assumptions made of them based on something they can't control.

Odds are if it's something you won't be able to get away with saying to the average person in your real life without either weirding them out or pissing them off, it's probably something taboo on the internet as well.
