I've known a number of people who did JET and it amounted to their sitting in their rooms using English internet and living off McDonald's and conbini food and making 0 friends in Japan for a few years. Then they come back and say it was shit and nothing special.
It's not like Japan is some magical fairyland either, it's full of normal everday boringness all around, but to not even try to see the culture is just sad. I guess it's like, because they live there, they feel they "have time later" to do things like visit a bunch of temples or see a kabuki play or hit up a bunch of maid cafes, hit up Comiket etc. If you're there for 2 weeks and on limited time then you are more compelled to make use of it because you can't just "do it later."
