Instead of ignoring commenters who had a hate boner for any certain member, they started bringing that shit up in content and accusing everybody who dislikes that person a racist or sexist or both, with the same "If you don't like it you don't have to watch but also you're a bad person for quietly not liking it and not watching" attitude that we're seeing lately.
Introducing gender dynamics to an entertainment group where it was largely absent is like opening up a previously monogamous relationship. It's just asking for drama.
