Bonds form between individuals who spend time together., and the opposite is that familiarity breeds contempt...I don't think think most people would or could argue with that, and workplaces are where people spend...well in the US, at least 8 hours every week day together.
Appologies if this seems a bit tismy, but it bothers me how people try to deny the fundamental nature of people in the workplace just because the ideal is supposed to be impartial meritocracy.
