>>34626909It's a more complex issue than that because real artists combine elements from reference material not just all the time but as a normal part of the craft. Only an artistic savant could have the ability to conjur up any kind of object on command and visualize it at correct perspective and in full detail by sheer force of imagination. The amount of things you would have to fave a working and indepth visual familiarity with for that to even be possible would be astronomical. This is why artists tend to specialize in subject matter, portraiture, landscape, etc. There's obviously cross-applicability in different subject matters and techniques but there's a reason you see accomplished artists focused on a narrow range of subjects. If you want to branch into painting subjects outside of your expertise you're going to use references copiously.
An argument could be made that the way the AI is doing it is different because it's not just using referances but algorithmically transforming things but nobody, and I mean nobody, seriously rejects transformation of existing works as an invalid way to create new works. There are people at-large and in public right now who own T-Shirts with a print of the mona lisa smoking a joint on it. A person could respond "that's clearly satire" but then it just forces the question of where we draw the line between how much transformation does it take to render something acceptable and it creates the emberassing situation where the more transformational the work and less satirical the more the work will be accused of plagiarism which is an odd place to be when a person ends up taking the position "the less like the original source it is the more of a cheat it is".
The fact that it is being made by an AI is only an issue if we want to say a particular kind of medium is inappropriate for using to create art. I personally think there are methods that should be shunned, AI included but not for the reasons Kiara seems to believe. There are very skilled and successful artists who would say no artistic medium is invalid.
TL;DR This is more complex than Kiara is really allowing the issue to be.
I personally say fuck AI art but I don't like how Kiara framed it.
