Dragon Quest is a series with a high floor but low ceiling. It always plays well, but you’re never gonna get a high point like you would with other JRPGs because unfortunately, the creators of DQ never really bothered to change things up over the years. It’s ALWAYS been a safe rpg, maybe even too safe.
But worst of all is that because of the lack of innovation, games from literally 30 years ago (remasters, of course) play out similar to the modern games. DQ5 and DQ11 have stupidly similar stories and the gameplay plays out the exact same way in many cases, yet the games are like 28 years apart. So with that in mind, I would tell you to never start with the old games. You’re never going to enjoy an old game more than the brand new one because of how close they are in design. You’re just gonna value the modern graphics, modern mechanics, voice acting and so on more than old graphics.
(DQ11 is a legitimately great game though. Definitely look at get it if you ever want to get into the series)
