I'm not saying that they don't take a bigger slice of the pie than they probably should, but when you factor in that 20+ vtubers have been super chatted 1-3 million over 1-3 years, not to mention subs, merch, money from events, original songs, sponsorships, etc. you'd have to be crazy to claim it's still that low. They'd have to be seeing well under 10% (some maybe as little as ~1%) of total revenue generated for that to be true.

Almost all of that is taken by Cover. It doesn't matter anyways. They're contractors, not employees. They're paid a flat salary a month and that's it. We'll never know those numbers specifically but we can assume it amounts to no more than $30K in USD a year given the rough estimates of what an animator or voice actor/actress makes in USD on a yearly basis.

You're comparing some cases of animators and voice actors getting fucked over to vtubers, who are in a different industry (certainly to animators). I've no doubt there's a problem with companies outsourcing animation, or maybe some voice acting on a barely liveable wage, but those at the top of their game are not living on a shoe string. I do not know if that number is before or half twitches 50/50 or 70/30 split but that was what they made.
Asmongold recently did some math on how with the 50k to 60k average viewers he had on his main channel if he did 10 minutes of ads every hour he would make 500k a month.

The best person to compare would be Tyler1 the guy fluctuates between 13k to 30k these days which is Gura's numbers. He doesn't read donations as much and doesn't beg for subs. And he barely does sponsors like how Cover barely gives EN sponsors.

There's a problem in Japan right now where there are so many houses just basically abandoned because whoever inherited them, if in fact there is anyone to inherit them, don't want to live in them because they want to live in the big cities.
Even stuff 50km out of tokyo was basically abandoned and then sold for like $1k. Enterprising nip who bought it renovated it for $2k and then rents them out.

Then there are sponsored streams. Based on the talent and the company, it goes from 20k all the way to hundreds of thousands. Mr. Coom from Luxiem was being paid 20-40k (can't remember the exact amount) just for some shitty game promo so you can imagine what top Holo talents with 2-4x more viewers are getting paid.
There's also, of course, SC revenue and memberships. I don't follow Gura but AFAIK she used to earn at least 50k USD per month just from her memberships. You can also bet your ass that they're making some good money from ads as well.
There's just no scenario in the world where top holos are not multi millionaires after streaming for 2+ years. The only ones making less than a million per year are mid or low tier talents but even they are raking in hundreds of thousands. Situation may be different for ID girls but it's hard to gauge their income when their main audience (ID) can't donate through YT.
