What is disturbing is that so many people fall for it and can't stop themselves. Even if money was not part of the transaction, it's not real, it has no real value to the audience. The ability to realize that and not be affected by GFE is probably a skill issue that relies on mastering that very same manipulation talent. If you fail at life and fail at communicating properly and getting what you need, then you probably severely lack in that talent.
