>>36136686The issue with the MGS series is that the PS2 and PS3 have analog (pressure sensitive) buttons on their controllers, and MGS2, 3, and 4 were designed with control schemes utilizing them, as in pressing buttons lightly vs. hard makes you do different actions. And then the PS4 and PS5 removed that feature from their controllers, so they can't simply be ported to the newest Playstation, they would need to have a significant control scheme overhaul.
And as you may know, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear series got fired from Konami, who holds the rights to the series, and they don't really seem keen on porting his legacy to new consoles.
MGS1, however, was developed for the PS1 which did not have analog buttons, so there would be no issue porting it to a modern Playstation, but it's apparently only digitally available on the PS3, probably for the above reason.
MGS1 and MGS2 were ported to PC, but those ports are from 20 years ago when PC ports were generally terrible, so they both are inferior to the console versions of the game, there are also difficulties with getting them to run on modern hardware. MGS2 was briefly available from GOG with patches that made it run but it was pulled from the store and is now only available through piracy. MGS1 is still on GOG but seems to require fan patches to make it not-shitty, and even then it still has cut content compared to the console version. Those are English versions though, I have no idea what the state of the JP PC ports are, or if they even exist.
So basically the easiest and most "modern" way to play the series is either on original hardware, or with a PS3, where you can buy MGS1 digitally, and then get the HD collection which contains HD ports of MGS2 and 3 (as well as the classic Metal Gear 1 and 2), and then PS3 is also the only way to play MGS4 so you're good there. And then you skip the rest of the games since they're bad.
Fun fact: the original Xbox also had analog buttons, which allowed it to have a good port of MGS2 (but not 3 for some reason), and then they also got rid of them on the Xbox 360 controller.
