Being a vtuber allows you to stay anonymous and avoid worrying about your looks, and you can still display some basic emotions by using your avatar. Also, if you're into larping you get to play a character which you can always use for skits and various improvisations. It's an intermediate option between face-cam and no-cam streamer with a sprinkle of chuunibyou.
It's a bit unfortunate that most successful male vtubers are targeted toward women so watching them for straight men feels a bit like watching kpop idols being gay. Vtubing only exploded in the last ~3 years and it was/is dominated by women, but eventually some male vtubers will rise to the top who will target men as their primary audience. It's just a matter of time and talent, but vtubing being a niche in the West makes it harder to make it big and that's not taking into consideration how hard it is to become a successful streamer to begin with.
