The board is basically completely unfamiliar with the notable independents on both the JP and the English scene. It was extremely evident in the lead-up to Nijisanji EN with all the "who" posting about the graduated past lives when they were all more profile to anyone who followed the scene.
Basically the only indies /vt/ cares about are the ones who shill themselves, the tiny ones who can maintain intimacy with chat, or the ones who /vt/ grew up beside like they're some childhood friend turned idol. That or VShojo adjacent girls that're benefitting from corporations.
Saying that you're looking for "content" or "personality" in your vtubers is bullshit and you know it. No one was watching Maid Mint here before she had a logo on her and she was better than anyone in /wvt/ or /asp/ in putting out music and actual unique stream content. Most of the board doesn't know fucking Shibuya Hal.
There's nothing wrong with living the way you do but don't bullshit yourself. Corporate vtubers have more tangible skill sets and resources than independents, they're almost always better by any real metric. Your indie oshi probably doesn't actually have any content that isn't random just chatting or backlog games.
