My assumption is that the people in chat who do "translations" only know simple Japanese and for the positive attention they "translate" the few phrases they recognize. If they notice the vtuber saying "shouganai" they will unironically write "[EN]: It can't be helped."

That's so sad. I would translate simple things for people in the beginning but I always made sure I was legitimately correct, and clarified elements I didn't understand. You can still be helpful without being fluent. Why just make shit up?

Actual JSL here who has done his university reps and is N4 level. At least for Haachama one of the translator-kuns, Shrek, is not being a faggot and his translations check out. Not sure about regular translators for other Holomem

there's a time when I tried live TLing at Kanata stream around October last year. some EOP thanking me in chat, and a nip decide to help translate some part which I missed. that's the first time I feel useful in my life.
never did live TLing again since my oshi has a better dedicated live translator now, but I have a better motivation for doing nihongo rep now
