What is /asp/?
A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.
FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber? Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!
>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go? Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.
>Where can I find artists/riggers? vtuber.gg , ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit,
Skeb.jp , etc.
>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models? Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off
nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or
booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!
>Where can I learn how to digital market myself? https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage >Where can I find some good games to stream? https://twitchtracker.com/games https://sullygnome.com/ >Twitch or YouTube? The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.
>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content? First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

I do roommate YouTubing and my videos get something like 1k to 10k views but despite that just can't get over my anxiety. I guess I am hoping that by not having my real face when I go live I will be able to deal with the nervousness etc better but I always have this nightmare of just freezing up on debut and realising that even if I can create videos I just can't live stream. Well with my current timeline I am probably looking at debut in March or April so maybe I will manage to do a roommate stream until then to figure out how I deal with being "live". Anonymous
>>38992721 Seems like reasonable advice for females. It is enough just to work hard and smart assuming they have a bit of talent. Their audience is always hungry to find new chuubas, and there are enough viewers willing to brave combing through 1 and 2 views that growing through those numbers is not unbearable. Though I would add that you should stream as much as possible. None of this streaming 1-2 times a week for 2 hours kind of shit.
I think a male doing the same would just flounder for a very long time with little to no growth. I have seen it happen way too many times. I am beginning to think that being a variety streamer as a male vtuber is just not a viable strategy to get viewers at a reasonable pace. Maybe if you were very skilled and entertaining you could pull it off but I think even then growth would be kind of slow. At the end of the day, the audience for male vtubers is just too small to support the number of males trying to make it these days.
I saw a couple examples of males grow in a considerably faster way recently that made me completely rethink what I see as the ideal way to be a content creator, at least for males. They were using youtube to find large communities that already exist, think magic, yugioh, wow, ff14, wh40k, pokémon, fortnight ect. Basically if there are multiple youtube channels out there with 500k+ subs for a topic then it is probably viable to specialize in. Then they would use meme yt shorts and edited videos for these dedicated communities to gain relatively quick boosts of followers which actually will result in viewers as long as the person streams the relevant content. I think using this strategy it might be possible to potentially become a high 2 to low 3 view within a year, something that I see as extremely difficult just doing as a variety streamer on twitch.
Its important to state that you do have to specialize for this strategy to work, tons of people wont want to sub to a channel that just puts out videos on random shit. And from what I have seen, doing the variety streamer thing on youtube is just strait up worse than doing it on twitch, male or female. The youtube algorithm just is not good at promoting this kind of variety streamer like it does specialty content.

>>38996980 How naïve. If you have spent any amount of time watching vtubers of different sizes you would quickly realize that 'just making good content' is neither sufficient nor strictly necessary to grow and maintain a large viewerbase. Obviously There are too many examples of great content creators that have little to no growth, or are even declining. Likewise, look at some of the top channels on twitch right now, vtuber or otherwise, you will see some of the laziest and lowest quality content out there. If your goal is to get viewers it is a waste of time to create good content without thinking about it, you cant just create an audience out of thin air with 'quality content'.

Anonymous
>>38996939 You are not wrong. The male streamers I watch are big enough to live off of it and they are not variety streamers. They specialize in one category/genre of games or a limited circle of games that they play well and keep it interesting.
One even became the most viewed streamer on twitch this year for a new release of a popular game; which everyone is playing right now. The thing is, it's just one installment the line of 5 games he's been playing for past 3 years or so now.
The same holds for female streamers to some extent. Being a vtuber itself is unique so that gets viewers, but what really separates you any other e-girl or twitch thot?
Personality and consistency is what gets growth. Not being a total variety streamer and instead being something people know to come to you for. That is what gets a dedicated audience.
That can be horror games. It can be loosely "tactical" games that cover rts, fps, tps. It can be a handful of nintendo games. It can be retro games. It can be the latest obscure indie shit. It can be obsession with a certain line of rpgs. Just let it be SOMETHING other than just Fortnite, Overwatch, latest CSGO clone, shit I can already watch hundreds of other streamers play badly and marketed to kids.
>They were using youtube to find large communities that already exist, think magic, yugioh, wow, ff14, wh40k, pokémon, fortnight ect. I don't even play games, i genuinely dislike streaming games because it takes away my enjoyment from playing them. I do wish to create "original" content or at least stuff that's rarely seen, but in the end I'm well aware nobody wants that or cares about it. It will never get a new audience to watch. Unfortunately for my streaming career my personal goals are more important than my popularity so it's what you call NGMI i suppose
Anonymous
>>38998369 I meant to add a bit more than this, but forgot to. Obviously creating high quality content is always better than creating low quality content all other things being equal. And I am in fact recommending people create as high quality of content as they can.
Although arguably sacrificing some quality for quantity seems like a very good trade especially if you are on twitch. >>38998800 Do you have some specific critiques of what i have said that me having really amazing numbers would negate? Well, I'll just say I have been vtubing as a male on twitch for about 6 months. In that time I have gotten about 250 followers, and depending on the day my ccv ranges from about 10-25. This leaves me in the rather uncomfortable place where I seem to be doing both significantly better than most of the males that also started streaming on twitch about around when I did, and that I feel like growth has been almost unbearably slow with high chances of it stagnating in the future.
The reason I suggest that people try the method using youtube that I do, is because I have seen more two different people give up on streaming on twitch for quite a while with little to no traction (im talking less than 3 ccv most of the time) quickly shoot up into the low 2 digits on youtube basically doing a version of what I recommended up above. If I had not gotten rather attached to the community I have built over the last 6 months I would be tempted to abandon it all and follow my own advice.

I feel like what will happen when I become a VTuber is because there is no information about me on the internet and no way to find out my identity, what will happen is I will end up getting "doxxed" but it will be some person that is not me, and this information will get passed around and accepted as the truth. Which on one hand I don't particularly care since it's not my private information, I still hate the idea of some random unrelated dude's actions being associated with me "behind the scenes." I wonder how many people this kind of "false dox" has already happened to and the culprits don't even realize it. It's obnoxious how obsessed they are with digging for this stuff, when the whole premise of VTubing is supposed to entail some degree of privacy.
Anonymous
>>39002795 This is actually what I too am afraid of. I don't want to accidentally screw over some random person just because someone else thought they were me. If I'm going to get doxxed, at least don't let a wrong person get doxxed instead of me.

Even if you want to avoid this, you should still take it as a warning that your speech-to-text-to-speech WILL occasionally misunderstand what you're saying. Otherwise, it's not bad. I opened it to the public too early, but I'd set it up for sharing pictures, files, notes, or organizing collabs, and then opened it up once I'd had a few requests. None of those people post there though, so should have held off. Biggest trick to getting activity is having a friend in there who's semi-active, so that there's baseline activity. I post most days, but if nobody's responding to anything there, then there's little point asking "how was everyone's day?"

Anonymous
>>39036809 I've streamed on both (I'm still not a vtuber though) and generally there's no reason not to do both. I think Twitch now forces ads even for literal nobodies so newer streamers might have a rough time starting out there. Someone clicks your stream with like 2 viewers and instead of seeing you, they see an ad, or the ad plays at random. People just fuck off.
On youtube you can also use videos to promote your streams on either platform, though keep in mind asking people to click some other website and follow you there is asking a lot.

Reminder that you need social skills to be a streamer, if you have shit conversation skills irl you will have lots of dead air, shit chat interaction, suck at collabs and people will leave after a while of opening your stream because they can't empathize with you. If you really want to be a vtuber, use this as a reason to improve your social skills. Record yourself, check if you mumble, see how good you are at filling dead air, you should be able to talk to yourself for long periods of time because when you just start you will have 0 viewers and if someone joins in and all they find is some png/vroid/live2d model playing in silence, they will just close the tab and move to someone else who actually talks. At the very least you need to become decent background noise if you want to retain viewers. This is super basic advice so think of this as the bare minimum to be a streamer, if you can't even do this, you better start practicing so you can do it.
Anonymous
>>39069832 I'm good at all of that on stream but I'm terrible at it outside of it. I can't get people on my stream because nobody knows i exist and I've been working very hard in my past life to assure nobody knows me...

>>39069832 >shit conversation skills irl >should be able to talk to yourself Big difference between these for me. I'm okay at sperging out about a topic I enjoy but avoid doing that to others, so I'm not quite as good at talking to myself.

>>39069962 If you're really good at it, I recommend you use social media to shill your own stuff. Check your own vods and clip the best parts of it, use them to make shorts and post them twitter, youtube. Tweet you're going live using a max of 2 hashtags (ex: #Envtuber), get a discord channel to suck your viewers in so they can form a community and know when you're going live in a more direct way.
Make friends with people who stream the same shit as you, join their discord channels (if you have shit in common you're very likely to get along with their viewers as well) and if you get 4 or more viewers, raid them so their communities gets to check you and the streamer can shoutout your channel with streamelements and on their social media (as vtubers tend to thank people who raid them on their post-stream tweets). The thing is to build an entwined community with other content creators you have in common so you guys can share viewers. Some people shill their streams on other people's discords, only do this if the streamer has a shilling channel that encourages such behavior, otherwise people will look at you bad.
>>39070098 >I'm okay at sperging out about a topic I enjoy but avoid doing that to others, so I'm not quite as good at talking to myself. Depending on the topic it could be nice but if you're worried about it you can practice by recording your ramblngs instead of streaming them and watch them later to see how you can improve them.
>And I'm horrible at doing this while playing video games, because games are fun and I'm focused on doing well. Unless people watch you for your epic plays, it's ok to be less focused on the game and more on commentary/chat interaction. Sadly, when streaming, your job is to entertain so if you can't do well in a game and talk, you got to either get good at doing both at the same time or neglect the game for the sake of being entertaining (some people even find it fun seeing your reactions when you fail at the game so not being absolutely good at the game is also a good way to provide content).
Anonymous
>>39071186 Used social media to shill my stuff, with methods you described, no change in viewership.
