I get your point. But lots of people smoke/vape out of boredom and to keep themselves occupied. The same can also be applied to binge eaters where people eat as a hobby, even after they've had more than their fill. They don't need to eat that much, they've had enough to survive, but they will still continue doing it.

I think you're getting the wrong idea here. I'm not trying to defend or deflect. People obviously know it's not good for them, i'm just giving a reason for why they do it. That's literally it. Whether it's stupid to do or not, people don't care. And just like people who eat remarkably unhealthy food, they will continue to do it.

They typically do to me too, but sometimes I'll catch a whiff of a smoker nearby and get more of a raisin smell than a straight doodoo and ash smell and get a little nostalgic.

It was pretty easy to stop smoking : just throw my pack and my lighters in the garbage and vow to never smoke again.
