>>4205243I never got into Kiara from the start, but when she started holotalk that became one of the few regular shows that I watched.
I can understand that her voice turns off a lot of folks used to the typical streamer voice, kinda like an EN version of Towa. Numberfagging, roommate problems are probably also a contributor but I always felt like that wasn't all of it, that there was some core reason I didn't like her but was not able to pinpoint it.
Recently I went back and watched a few of her streams and some of her newer clips, and all of a sudden it clicked.
Kiara can't do the "I'm joking" tone.
With most JP chuubas and even the other holoEN girls, it's very easy to tell when they're making a joke vs when they're serious. They have a different "tone" that they use, which makes it a lot easier to understand "ah, she's joking lol".
With Kiara, we often have to rely on whether she laughs or not. If she's in a jolly mood and laughs after some joke, you can safely understand that she's joking. But sometimes when she goes waaay too seriously into a joke, it gets very hard to tell if she's joking or actually serious, because she doesn't change her tone into a "joking" one.
The worst effects of this can be seen in the PekoTori collab when she comments about Pekora's brick house, and then again when Moona shows up. If Kiara was by herself in that situation, the audience wouldn't have any idea whether she seriously didn't like Moona or if she was just playing a bit. This is also why a lot of "Kiara hates Moona" rrats formed at the time.
This effect is significantly reduced when she's in a collab with another JP member, which is why Holotalk is watchable. The JP girls can help the audience understand when a topic is told jokingly vs when it's serious. Even in the aforementioned PekoTori collab, it didn't do much damage because Pekora's reactions at the time at least gave the sensible audience the understanding that it was a joke.
KFP have probably gotten used to this after long periods of watching her and getting used to get mannerisms. But idk if even they can identify whether she's joking or not sometimes.
What made it click was this recent clip :
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax8VWl_qpWAFrom context and everything it's pretty obvious that she's joking, but because there's no change in tone, there's always an instinctual doubt of "she IS joking right?" in the back of your head especially if don't watch her regularly.
Best comparison is Rushia, but she has the tone change perfected to an art, so it never leaves any doubt in the viewer when she plays a Yandere bit or joke.
