Stock fraud and botting memes aside, she piqued people's interest because not only she was the first NijiJP debut in a while (not counting the virtual academy thing) but she was a solo debut instead of the usual ACCELERATE wave, people also subbed her only for the meme. After she reached 1M subs, people realized she's just a very middle if the road vtuber with nothing special really going for her and stopped watching her.

people who don't live in japan have no idea, it was a real viral phenomenon.
normies on TV, radio were talking about her. normies on insta, twitter were talking about her. normie book shops and otaku goods shops put up references to her on paper signs.
game shops put the resident evil games in a special corner with handwritten signs saying "Salome played this!" "o-haabu" etc

her face was on advertisements in trains.
heck even this week you can drop by some konbinis and be greeted by her voicelines promoting the nijisanji crunky chocolate collab

Nobody really argues that she was a meme. It's more about how much it was natural growth, or a result of Anycolor's viral marketing.

simpler explanation was that it went viral because it pushed all the right buttons at the right time, and the explosive growth and gigantic viewership came FROM the virality, and not the other way around; occam's razor and all that

Look at how other viral chuubas that attracted normalfags (Gura and Kobo) did, yes they're nothing compared to their prime anymore, but they certainly didn't drop off the face of the internet in the span of a week, it took over a year for their hype to fizzle out slowly and they're still fucking big even after that.

Salome's sudden implosion was more unnatural than her sudden rise.

Kobo is the same as Salome, if you want to argue she's "irrelevant" (as if she isn't still one of the biggest nijis in japan) then Kobo is just as irrelevant even if she's still the biggest ID vtuber
