>>42396587Sympathetic villains are a bit overrated, but your villain should always have a motive. It doesn't need to be a particularly deep or complex one, even just being a megalomaniac who wants power is completely fine, but you should still take the time to flesh out their character.
Doing bad things just to do bad things is boring and narratively unsatisfying. The easiest way to avoid doing this is to indulge in some sympathetic villain tropes, but even a cartoonishly evil villain can be written in a compelling way.
