At first people were talking shit and making fun of their designs but that scuff became endearing to many and the board generally started rooting for them as underdogs, propelling them with meme magic. Shit only hit the fan once they started collabing with the girls, because doing so stepped on the long-existing fanbase of gachikoi and cgdctfags (as a result of, you know, building up that fanbase from essentially not collabing with men for almost 2 years, in addition to how holoJP generally operates). You can't just step on the product that people had become so invested in like that and not expect pushback.
I used to watch them prior to the collabs, like literally almost every stream, but not going the "idol" route made me drop them, because the fans who had been enjoying holoEN since its inception were there first, and were only there because of the product offered. Tempus were still "outsiders" who should've adapted to holo and its fans, not the other way around, in order to avoid obvious conflict from happening. Also, people's criticism wasn't just aimed at the guys, it was at anyone who took part in the change. Actually for a while the guys weren't even getting much criticism, because they were still generally making their own fans happy, and it wasn't their responsibility for the girls' decisions that were making part of their fanbase upset. But after a while their goodwill declined and well, that neutral stance generally turned negative since people became fed up from all the fighting and bitterness of how things were going.
