>>4326809KIND of, but also Manzai is not improvisational. And also, a good tsukkomi doesn't just "shut down" the boke, they react to it amusingly in a way that enhances the routine. This is why it's possible to be a "bad tsukkomi."
So here's an example of a bad tsukkomi:
https://youtu.be/huhBjp5IByw?t=2103Gura was obviously making a joke, Kiara didn't seem to understand this and thought Gura was just actually stupid, so she started mocking her in this drawn-out, excruciating way. So while Kiara is "shutting down" Gura, she's doing it in a way that doesn't seem to indicate she even realizes it was a joke in the first place. (Not intended as a knock against Kiara by the way, she has a pretty good comedy IQ as well and is capable of being really funny, this was just an example that struck me as "bad manzai")
I guess I need to give a counter-example, so Luna comes to mind, she's usually good at doing a Manzai-ish dual comedy dynamic. Here's a good example of Luna doing a good tsukkomi. Forgive the clipfaggotry but the subtitles help:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUlc5AmXNpwYou can see Luna is "going along with" Matsuri, letting Matsuri be the funny one, acting mad when Matsuri presses her buttons, etc. It helps that Matsuri and Luna know each other pretty well though and have kind of developed a good chemistry.
