Granted, if you focus on ranged combat you are missing out somewhat, the game is very much designed around melee, saying that as someone whose first run of Dark Souls was a pure caster (who I literally never leveled Vit on because I'm retarded).
I'll also say though that casting (outside of cheese setups) isn't ever as easy as some people claim. Spells are slow and elemental resistances are an issue martials don't have to worry about.
