Many people who pay place the audience, whether they want to admit it or not, in the role of the provider(emotional or monetary) for the vtuber even if they don't perceive themselves as ever remotely having a chance. If someone else comes along and apparently assumes many of the benefits of the role (close interaction and mutual knowledge) which are denied to the audience, ostensibly as a matter of practicality, without actually taking on the responsibilities, it comes off as unfair and incongruous, doubly so if the vtuber seems to still expect that kind of support from the audience.
