See, that's always the problem. People love to feel like they're part of something huge. They like the idea of taking something nice and smashing it together with everything else under the sun. It screams 'infinite potential', like everything else becomes equally liked by association. Unfortunately, just like the MCU, when it does happen, viewers don't really engage with it. They ogle it until the novelty wears off and then fuck off, just content that they've marked another thing off on their list like a tourist speeding through a top hundred attractions list. They don't actually put their money where their mouth is.

Or, more on-topic example, I like to watch 1view indies, compliment their design or their behavior as cute or their streams as cozy, and go about my way a few minutes or sometimes two hours later. Sometimes I come back, sometimes I never see them again. Life goes on.

But if someone watches a streamer just because they're that streamer, and if they weren't that streamer, they wouldn't have their browser on that channel? They're parasocial. The uniqueness of the streamer's identity is the whole selling point of the stream.

That's a very generous application of that word. I have friends who watch movies because they are made by specific directors or get excited by new music releases because they are made by specific artists. This falls under what you're describing de su, but there is no social aspect so I would not call it parasocial.
Rather, to me the line is between coming back to Dyrus streams because you want to support him, and watching him because it's a reliable source of entertainment and enjoyment.

It just seems that way to you precisely because your media consumption habits (and pretty much most people's) are already so deeply steeped in parasocial relationships that they can barely conceive what it would feel like not to be so. Fact of the matter is when most people talk about 'parasocial relationships' they're happily laying into the straw man of the obsessed schizo who thinks that they'll date the streamer one day. Since they aren't remotely close to being that sort of person, they reassure themselves they're above it all, they separate the art from the artist, they see the world for what it is. But then something like ZilianOP or Kevin Spacey shit happens and then they convince themselves that the sheer level of disgust and need for vengeance they feel is perfectly normal. Not at all a product of being parasocially attached to a figure they secretly felt intimate with and betrayed by, no sir.
Streamers especially always have an emotional hook in anyone who watches them for who they are. It might be in a different place for each person, but it's always there. People just always pretend they're the detached ones and the rest are the schizos until it's over their own hot button issue. Then it's all "You don't understand, it's different from that inconsequential bullshit, this is actually IMPORTANT." And it all boils down to the same plea at the end: "You should have been the person I cared about."

The merch is a great point for all the wrong reasons. I rather think of the merch as memorabilia of social interactions with people I actually interact with (or used to).
I have a Goodsmile Okayu at home which I bought while camping next to some tourist trap with my friends. Okayu specifically because I watched a Mario Kart tournament together with some other friends the year before and one of them really liked and rooted for her.
Most of my merch are actually just plushies, which I ordered while visiting my then-relationship partner who I used to watch streams with together, and we used to exchange plushies as some dorky ritual whenever we see each other. I even bought one as a gift but never got around sending it. I used to just put them in random corners of my door's or webcam's field of view, f.e. while streaming or having guests.
Then there is a music CD which I talked about with one of my friends who also makes his own music and it didn't seem like a huge pricetag at the time.
The indie I watch mostly because she played my favorite game and had zatsudans and fanart drawing streams about it. I skip streams when I have social calls though or decide to work later. It's arguably parasocial because I haven't moved on and I like chatting with her. So I'll give you that I am partially guilty, I suppose.
The memberships I bought because I used to record and leak membership content when it still was more acceptable to do here. I think it's stupid to have paywalled streams but I also understand that free content has to be funded somehow, so that was my way to say thank you and fuck you to everyone.

Again, "because that's the definition" is a red herring - present the definition verbatim and sourced if you want to be strict and technical about it, else I will just pretend to have the 2006 Encyclopedia of Children in front of me.
Either way, in that way I am parasocial too, sure. I think you even underestimate the pervasiveness because even if you don't have TV, you are going to be confronted with stories about your elders (when told about, not by them) or fictional people altogether and identify with them, even in your village wothout TV and radio people are necessarily parasocial because you will always talk about and judge people who are not in your vicinity. We only strongly associate it with mass media because the 1950s both of these became widespread is the first time people used the term "parasocial relationship" to refer to it.
Secondly, there are still varying levels of how emotionally invested you are, so yes, I do think there are some people who are not parasocial enough to feel disgust by anything a stranger could do "to" them. Wouldn't count myself to the ones above it - I don't know what Zillian or Spacey did nor do I care to look it up, but here on vt I err strongly towards calling every yab a nothingburger, financial and emotional investment notwithstanding - but I am sure some vtubers out there could hurt me and it's just luck plus a relatively loose form of engagement that this hasn't happened yet.
