Shes can engage with those people and joke with them because she knows the territory well enough to gauge when its acceptable to go for an edgy joke or back off. Shes a pretty good comedian on her own and reads chat well enough to use them to elevate the content.
She does a good job of following trends and experimenting. Has good variation in stream content.
She consistently brings high energy and demonstrates a full emotional range over a stream. Shes good at making sure her model is highly animated.
Her success is something that is obvious in hindsight given 'alt-right with an anime profile pic' shit.
She didn't grow entirely by controversy, and 90% of the time it isn't even her making the controversy, but its certainly great free advertising to capture her audience. Were I to guess its deliberate to use the useful idiots that think she is controversial as content and advertisers for her.
