The novelty died down as it just becomes part of normal streamer culture. The only thing separating chuubas and a run-of-the-mill streamer are the in-jokes and the anime avatar.

these things take time and vtubing is still in its nascency. it took decades for anime to penetrate the western mainstream and in many ways is still considered niche. it'll probably take at least a couple of generations for vtubers to truly become part of the public consciousness and will likely be unrecognisable by then anyway
