If you were Sega/Nintendo or Marvel/DC at their peak, and acquired your competitor, then either integrating them or keeping them around as a subsidiary is almost certainly going to be the best business decision, because it's the only way that you're also going to acquire the majority of your competitor's fans. Shitting on your competitor once you've won inherently also means shitting on their emotionally invested fans, who otherwise would very likely have become your customers.
It sounds like he could've had the best of both worlds, but chose bitchy woman behaviors over good business, which is not based at all. I can't think of another reason to do that other than some kind of personal honor thing, but as I said, I don't know shit about it.
