My jp only friends, how many reps did it take you to have enough japanese, that you started to understand streams? I am currently learning.

Depends on who do you want to watch, I'm N2 and I can understand 70% of most Holo, except Marine and Polka (who is my oshi unfortunately)
It also depends on what they are streaming, gaming stream is easy to follow, zatsudan is harder, collab stream is generally easy unless there are too many people speaking at the same time

It's hard to say since I've been watching anime for 10+ years and it helped build a lot of vocab for me. If you just watch streams and pick out the commonly used words and phrases to learn and work your way down in frequency then you can probably understand more than half of whats being said during regular game streams within a month. Understanding zatsudans will take a lot longer, though. Maybe a few months at least depending on your methodology.

I already knew enough japanese to understand streams by the time I found vtubers so I can't give a number. But I will say that if you focus on only a specific streamer or two you will get used to their turns of phrase and choice of wording so it's a bit less intimidating than just some giant "learn japanese" as a goal

I just watched JP only streams for like 2 years and slowly started to understand.

For basic understanding you just need to associate a few JP words to their meanings. If you learn enough you'll slowly start piecing together small sentences and slowly understand.

Keep at it for a while and eventually you'll realize "huh, I can actually understand 90% of this now".

Also note : Reading and Listening are two completely different skills. But you should know at least hiragana and katakana.

Also Japanese have a tendency to shorten long words to make it easy to communicate

I always wanted to learn JP and watching Hololive motivated me
I already had some basic knowledges through anime but I also play games and read manga in Japanese to help me. After some months I became able to understand most of Miko,Marine, etc, those who are hard to understand .
My tips are to watch Cure dolly (she's good if you want to fundamentally understand Japanese instead of learning complew structure) and to watch JP clips because there is usually Japanese subs

I do Anki Core2k reps and texthooking any JP game that looks interesting to me. It took me 2 years to understand Shion this way. That isn't to say it'll take you 2 years, as I've been taking really small steps having burned out in the past trying to do 20 cards a day on top of uni. Whether you copy one of the anons here or not, the input is what's important. If you really truly want it you'll find a way. Godspeed anon.

Depends on how much effort you put in. If you just watch streams and try to pick up random words progress will be slow. If you really study every day you may be surprised how quickly you learn.

It depends on how much language input you have. I'm at about 3 years of daily study and I can understand ~20%, but I've been studying at a pretty casual pace. A lot of my study time has been on vocab, but I haven't kept up with listening in equal parts and it shows. Knowing a word vs being able to comprehend it immediately are different. No matter what though it's going to take some time. Just put in that daily effort and you'll make progress, even if it's only a little bit every day. It's a fun long-term goal to work towards.

I didn't mean to go quite that far. What I meant is more in a motivational sense, I guess? For example, some anon earlier mentioned anki core2k which is a basically a vocab list, you might look at it and see how many words there are and get super intimidated. But just skimming through it I can find all sorts of words that you're probably never going to hear on a random hololive stream

Obviously if you really want to know Japanese you will want to learn all these eventually, but you'd be surprised at how much you can get out of a smaller set of words as long as they're the right words. Don't get caught up in and scared off by drilling a bunch of vocab you have no practical application for

watch 16 hours a day, focus on the stream as much as possible, hikkiNEET + autism

Over 10 years watching anime didn't do shit besides learning isolated words, but helped learn words anyway. Watching streams for over 3 years now and dragging my ass to learn Kata/hiragana and I realized I can actually understand most of what they say now, to the point I can give a good fight to understand Koyo, Marine, etc. Then I go to clips or TL subs and compare what I got to what most people tl'd to see if I messed up somewhere.

Just keep going, eventually one day you wake up and will realize what your oshi is saying.

Anon you’re only hearing indiscriminate squabbles every now and then. I’ve learned 750+ kanji and still don’t know 90% of the shit they’re saying. Just the general idea.

The sweet spot for vtubers is just beyond that. Where your made up stories are at least related to the topic. Combine that with being able to type more than kawaii in chat and you'll have a blast.
